State workers layoffs continue, interpreters receive notices
HARTFORD, Conn. — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's budget office says 749 jobs have been eliminated so far from Connecticut's executive branch of government and more state worker layoffs are expected.
The figure announced Wednesday by the Office of Policy and Management marks 25 more job cuts than the office's June 22 announcement. It does not include jobs eliminated at the state's judicial branch.
The list of employees receiving pink slips includes the deaf and hard of hearing interpreting unit within the state's Department of Rehabilitative Services. About 40 workers and their supporters held a demonstration Wednesday outside the agency in Hartford, saying the move to cut their unit makes no sense.
The office contends many of the interpreters will continue to provide services through less expensive private agencies the state will ultimately utilize.
