Police: Man stole child's bike at gunpoint, shoplifted from dollar store

HAMDEN, Conn. — Police in Connecticut are searching for a suspect they say stole a 9-year-old's bicycle at gunpoint and then went to a general store, where he shoplifted.

Police said Monday they're looking for a white or Hispanic male in his 40s who's accused of stealing items from the Dollar General store in Hamden on Friday evening.

Police say the suspect told employees he had a gun and would shoot them. He used a metal shelf to break a sliding glass door after an employee shut off the power to the door as he tried to leave.

Police believe the man stole the bicycle prior to the theft. They say he pointed a gun in the 9-year-old's face as he was riding on Ridge Road. The bicycle was recovered outside Dollar General.
