Swimming areas of 3 state parks closed due to water quality

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The state Department of Environmental Protection has temporarily closed the swimming areas of three state parks due to poor water quality.

The swimming areas of Gardner State Park in Salem, Squantz Pond State Park in New Fairfield and Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middletown were all shut down Tuesday due to high bacteria levels found in the water.

DEEP Water Quality's Chris Bellucci says rain causes runoff that washes things into the swimming areas that can cause elevated levels of bacteria.

Officials will determine whether the swimming areas can reopen pending the outcome of tests on water samples collected from the affected parks.
