Possible tornado reported In North Haven

A possible tornado or microburst struck North Haven Wednesday as powerful thunderstorms worked their way through parts of Connecticut causing power outages.

North Haven police reported that the small tornado or microburst hit the Montowese section of town. Trees and power lines were downed and several homes were damaged.

The police department expects extended power outages and will conduct high visibility patrols in the area. Despite the damaging winds, police say no one was injured. United Illuminating provides power to the area.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Middlesex and New Haven counties effective until 2 p.m. They said the storm was moving east at 20 mph and could reach 60 mph wind gusts.

Just before 11 a.m. a storm toppled a power line on Route 202 by East Main Street in Torrington and lightning struck a transformer affecting 500 customers. Power was restored about 12:45 p.m., according to Eversource.

In Ellington, a power line needed to be rehung but power was restored about 1 p.m., 90 minutes after it went out.

The company's outage map showed customers in Redding, Naugatuck, South Windsor, and Montville were also experiencing outages.
