HAMDEN — New Haven's former police chief who resigned earlier this month after he was disciplined for berating people in public has landed a new job at Quinnipiac University.

The private school in Hamden announced Monday that Dean Esserman has been hired to review the university's emergency response plan.

School officials say Esserman has been hired as a "senior professional-in-residence for emergency management response."

A school spokesman confirmed that it is a full-time job but did not disclose the salary.

Police union President Craig Miller told The New Haven Register the hiring was "amazing." The union had voted no confidence in Esserman.

Esserman reportedly engaged in similar conduct while police chief in Providence, Rhode Island.

He was credited for his community policing efforts in New Haven.
