Wanted: New home for coyote spared from being euthanized

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — Authorities are still trying to find a home for a Rhode Island coyote that was spared euthanization after a public outcry, but it likely won't be at the Roger Williams Park Zoo.

Newport City Councilman John Florez tells The Newport Daily News that the Providence zoo lacks a suitable enclosure for the coyote known as Cliff, and building one would cost about $100,000.

Florez says an invitation from a Massachusetts zoo appears to be off the table.

The coyote was set to be killed after it was spotted roaming around Newport and Middletown in broad daylight and appeared at a bus stop crowded with children. Scientists said Cliff had become too comfortable around people.

Police rescinded the kill order after a public outcry.

    Cliff remains in the wild.
