Swastikas, Trump graffiti found in New Haven school athletic complex

NEW HAVEN — Painted swastikas and references to President-elect Donald Trump were found covering the Wilbur Cross High School athletic complex, police said.

The building had been secured mid-day on Saturday, but 48 hours later, staff members went in to grab some equipment and found the vandalism, police said Tuesday.

Investigators have found no evidence that anyone had broken into the building, and said the door may have been left unlocked.

"The investigation of hate crimes and hate-motivated behavior as well as the apprehension of hate crime offenders is of paramount importance to the New Haven Police Department," Officer David Hartman, a department spokesman, wrote in a news release.

Hartman said that no specific person or group was targeted, and that police consider the community to be the victims.

In a statement, the district said: "Once discovered, District officials took all the necessary steps to ensure the graffiti was removed in all locations and to maintain the safe and calm school climate."

Investigators have collected forensic evidence at the scene, and asked anyone with information to call 203-946-6304.

Other incidents have happened in the two weeks since the election. A video of an individual wearing a KKK outfit at a bonfire, later determined to have happened in East Windsor, circulated widely on social media. Also, in Wilton, high school students chanted, "Build the Wall," at a football game with Danbury High.
