Treasurer: R.I. residents get back $12.2M in unclaimed property

PROVIDENCE — The state treasurer's office says that $12.2 million in unclaimed property was returned to more than 10,000 Rhode Island residents in the last fiscal year.

The office of General Treasurer Seth Magaziner is currently overseeing more than $330 million in unclaimed property that's waiting to be reclaimed.

The office returned about $12.2 million in unclaimed property to 10,070 people in the 2017 fiscal year, a record high. It processed 8,860 claims worth $11.7 million the previous year.

Magaziner says there's money waiting for more than 100,000 residents.

He asks people to visit the office's website to reclaim property.

Unclaimed property can include money left in old bank accounts and safe deposit boxes, uncashed paychecks, unused gift certificates, unreturned utility deposits, uncollected insurance payments and forgotten stocks and dividends.
