UConn men meet West Virginia tonight in another title game

The UConn men's basketball program has made a habit of competing for championships.

The defending national champion Huskies go for another title tonight, playing West Virginia in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off final at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan. Game time is 6:30 p.m. (ESPN2).

They're attempting to win their third November tournament in the last five years. They captured the 2k Sports Classic last season and the EA Sports Maui Invitational in 2010.

Tonight's game will pit former Big East Conference foes. They last met in the second round of the 2012 Big East tournament, with UConn securing a 71-67 overtime victory.

UConn has dominated the overall series, leading 16-5 overall and winning four of the last five.

"We have had some great games against them over the years," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said in a Puerto Rico Tip-Off release. "I hope Sunday is just as good as some of the others, but with us winning it."

Both No. 17 UConn (3-0) and West Virginia (4-0) are undefeated.

The Huskies earned two hard-fought victories to reach the final, beating College of Charleston (65-57) Thursday and Dayton (75-64) Friday.

Senior Ryan Boatright is the team's driving force, averaging 21.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists this season. Rodney Purvis, who made his UConn debut against College of Charleston, is second in scoring at 14.0. Freshman Daniel Hamilton (12.7) and sophomore Amida Brimah (10.7) also are scoring in double figures.

The Mountaineers beat George Mason (91-65) and Boston College (70-66) to advance to the championship game. They rely on a balanced attack, with sophomore forward Devin Williams (15.3), senior guard Juwan Staten (14.5) and senior forward Jonathan Holton (11.0) leading the way.
