UConn's Vital to test NBA waters, but doesn't hire agent

Everybody else is doing it, why not Christian Vital?

Vital, the UConn sophomore guard, will declare himself eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft but will not hire an agent, the school announced on Friday. Vital can get feedback from the NBA but still has the option of returning to school for his junior season. He has until May 30 to make that decision.

“I want to thank my UConn family for allowing me the opportunity to be in this position,” Vital said. “I do want to see what my options are and take it from there.”

Since 2016, underclassmen have been allowed to test the NBA waters, but can return to school as long as they don’t hire an agent. So far this year, nearly 200 such players have already done so. Many will receive little or no feedback from NBA teams and won’t be invited to the NBA draft combine, then likely return to school. Only about 70 players typically get invites to the NBA combine, which is held May 16-20.

Two years ago, Yale’s Makai Mason went through the process. He received virtually no feedback or invites for NBA tryouts, and returned to Yale. Players have until Sunday to announce whether they plan to test the NBA waters.

Vital played in all 32 games for the Huskies last season, starting 23, averaging 14.9 points, 1.6 steals, and leading the team in rebounding, at 5.4 per game.
