During this special month, I invite everyone to learn more about the children in state foster care who are awaiting adoption by seeing the new film “Instant Family,” which realistically portrays what it’s like to adopt these children. The script writer himself adopted a sibling group of three from state foster care, so who better to change the way Americans view this type of adoption?

I recently attended a workshop given by the adoption therapist who consulted for the film. She is hopeful that it will begin breaking down the negative stereotypes about these children and, thereby, result in more families coming forward to adopt.

In Connecticut, there are now only 43 families on the state’s waiting list, which is not enough for the 500-plus children in need of adoption each year.
