Second teen to be tried as adult in Groton shooting

The teens involved in an Oct. 10 shooting in the parking lot of the 99 Restaurant & Pub in Groton had planned to rob the victim when he arrived to sell them marijuana, according to a court document.

A fight broke out, and 17-year-old Cevon T. Riley, who had been recruited by two others to serve as "muscle" during the "lick," or robbery, pulled out a gun and shot the victim, who was also 17, before fleeing with two others.

Details of the case are included in the arrest warrant affidavit in the case of a second teen charged in the incident, which has been added to the adult docket in New London Superior Court.

Renso Gonzalez, 17, of 11 Garfield Ave., New London, appeared before Judge Hillary B. Strackbein Tuesday after his case was transferred from juvenile court due to the seriousness of the charges. He pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery and accessory to first-degree robbery. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 at the Manson Youth Institution.

The accused gunman, Cevon T. Riley, 17, also of New London, had appeared in the adult court last week on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and carrying a pistol without a permit. He is also being held at Manson.

According to the affidavit, police found the victim lying in the parking next to a white pickup truck with wounds to the hand and abdomen. His brother was on scene, as was a restaurant employee, Cornell Haywood, who had witnessed the shooting, called 911 and applied pressure to the victim's wound.

A doctor who treated the teen at Yale-New Haven Hospital told Groton Town police the bullet fractured several bones in his left hand and left bullet fragments behind. The bullet then traveled into the lower left side of his torso, through his colon/large intestine and left kidney. The bullet came to rest next to his spine, and the doctor suspected it injured his spleen. The victim underwent surgery to keep the wound from becoming infected, and the doctor said the bullet was not removed since it was so close to the teen's spine.

The victim, who is not identified in the court document, told police that a juvenile he knows asked him to sell marijuana to people he didn't know. Reassured that they were "chill," the teen said he arranged to meet them at the restaurant and drove there with his brother.

One of the teens, later identified as Gonzalez, got into the pickup and sat between the victim and his brother while the second teen, later identified as Riley, stood next to the open passenger door, according to the affidavit. The victim handed Gonzalez the marijuana, who told the victim he "just got beat," and threw it out the window to Riley, according to the affidavit. Riley pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim, who fought with him and took him to the ground. Gonzalez also punched the victim before fleeing into the woods. Riley shot the victim once and fled the scene.

Gonzalez and Riley fled with a third man, Timothy McCoy, who had driven them to the parking lot in a blue Honda CRV, according to the affidavit.
