ECC softball: No. 13 Ledyard beats No. 4 Stonington in first round

Stonington — Madison Sanborn allowed two hits over five innings as No. 13 Ledyard beat No. 4 Stonington 5-0 in the first round of the Eastern Connecticut Conference softball tournament on Tuesday.

The game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to unsafe field conditions from the steady rain. Stonington had scored four runs — two on an Abby Flakus homer — and had a runner on first with no outs when the game was called. So the final score reverted back to the score after five innings.

Sanborn struck out six and walked two. Sam Fancher had two hits and scored a run and Sarah Whatton had a two-run double for Ledyard (13-8). Trinity Lennon of Stonington (14-7) allowed four hits and struck out seven with four walks.

In other games completed Tuesday, No. 3 Montville beat No. 14 Killingly 4-2 in 4.5 innings and No. 8 Fitch defeated No. 9 Plainfield 7-0. Three games were suspended and will be completed today at 4 p.m. — No. 12 Windham at No. 5 Waterford, No. 11 St. Bernard at No. 6 East Lyme and No. 10 Woodstock Academy at No. 7 Lyman Memorial.

ECC officials also announced it will play its quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Thursday at two sites. At Griswold, top-seeded Griswold will play No. 8 Fitch at 1 p.m., and No. 13 Ledyard will play the Waterford-Windham winner at 4 in quarterfinal games (the winners will play in the semis at 7).

At Veterans Field in Niantic, No. 2 Norwich Free Academy will play the Lyman-Woodstock winner at 1 p.m., and No. 3 Montville will play the East Lyme-St. Bernard winner at 4 in quarterfinal games (the winners will play in the semis at 7).

The championship game will be played at Griswold at Friday at 7 p.m.

    In other games:

    • Rori Curren broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and No. 3 Montville went on to defeat No. 14 Killingly 4-2 in a game stopped after 4.5 innings due to rain. Jillian Murallo, Alexis Michon, Amanda Perkins and Katelin Price added hits for the Indians (16-5) while Ashley Veillette homered for Killingly.
