    Potential candidate considers petition drive

Preston – The candidate who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for first selectman said today he is considering running as a petitioning candidate in November.

Vincent Eleazer said he was surprised no one at Monday's Democratic Town Committee caucus supported his candidacy, since the party did not have another nominee to challenge 18-year incumbent Republican Robert Congdon.

DTC Chairman Jerry Grabarek said the committee set a rule that nominees had to be registered Democrats, and Eleazer is registered as an unaffiliated voter. Eleazer said he filled out a card to change his affiliation, but "something happened," and it didn't get recorded.

"I'm not walking away angry," Eleazer said today. "I'm just walking away amazed."

Eleazer would have to file a petition by Aug. 7 to be placed on the ballot. According to the Secretary of the State's office, Eleazer would need to obtain official petitioning forms from that office and collect 12 signatures of Preston registered voters – 1 percent of the 1202 votes cast in the 2011 first selectman race.
