State police plan sobriety check points, patrols for holiday weekend

State police said they plan extra patrols and a series of sobriety checkpoints for the holiday weekend starting Thursday and running through midnight on July 7.

In addition, police said troopers will be strategically placed for speed enforcement on highways and secondary roads.

Last year, during the Fourth of July holiday enforcement campaign, state police issued 2,491 speeding tickets, 534 citations for failure to wear a seat belt and arrested 65 suspected drunken drivers. They also investigated 370 accidents, including 55 with injuries. No fatalities were reported.

This year, state police said they plan a sobriety checkpoint Thursday on Route 2 in North Stonington.
