    Local roundup: Panera Pirates win fourth straight ECML title

    Groton — The Panera Pirates beat Northeast Nine 6-2 on Wednesday, sweeping the best-of-three series to win their fourth straight Eastern Connecticut Major League title and keep the Chief G'Tinemong Trophy.

    Clayton Shaw went the distance for the win, Sawyer Gregory and Slater Gregory had a double and single each and Tristan Hurley scored twice for the Pirates. Causton Merchant had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in a run for Northeast Nine.

    Eric Somers pitched a one-hitter as the Pirates won the opener 11-1 on Tuesday night. Somers struck out nine with two walks. Billy Buscetto was 4-for-4, Slater Gregory was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Ryan Goodwin doubled for the Pirates. Merchant stole two bases and scored for Northeast Nine.

    Tigers win

    • Jacob Robson doubled, tripled and scored twice as the Connecticut Tigers beat the host Lowell Spinners 3-0 in a New York-Penn League game. Sacrifice flies by Blaise Salter in the sixth and eighth innings scored Robson and Will Savage scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Woodrow in the eighth. Daniel Pinero singled and doubled for the Tigers (32-25)

    Starter Austin Sodders, Jordan Smith, Joe Nivilhon and Bryan Garcia combined to pitch a five-hitter with six striekouts and no walks. Smith (1-1) got the win and Garcia earned his second save with a hitless ninth. 

    Local golf

    • Joan DeStefano of Preston was a member of the ladies team from Mohegan Sun Country Club which won the Thames Valley Cup. Her name was omitted from a story on the event. DeStefano and her teammates beat teams from Black Hall, Fox Hopyard, Stonington Country Club, Great Neck and Clinton Country Club to win the title.
