Janovic Jr. makes himself at home at Speedbowl

Waterford - Hometown driver Rob Janovic Jr. picked up his first checkered flag since June, 2013, highlighting a six-division racing card Saturday night at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Janovic Jr. claimed the SK Modified race, Bruce Thomas Jr. of Groton took his third Valenti Auto Mall Late Model feature of the year, Josh Galvin of Franklin won for the 10th time in the Street Stocks and Brendon Bock of Franklin Square, N.Y., won his first ever Speedbowl feature in the INEX Legend Cars race.

The night's Mini Stock feature was underway at press time and the New England Truck Series event also remained.

The 35-lap SK Modified race was slowed by several caution flags, but Janovic Jr. was near the front of the field throughout. He started fourth and was patient as a Shawn Monahan-Ed Puleo battle for the lead broke out ahead of him.

Monahan came out on top of that, leading until Janovic Jr. darted to his outside on lap 10. Janovic Jr. spent two laps inching his way ahead of Monahan before he claimed sole possession of the lead. Once in front, he pulled ahead over each of four additional restarts the rest of the way. Janovic Jr. could not be derailed and powered to victory. Keith Rocco of Berlin used a late surge to take second, passing Tim Jordan of Plainfield on the final lap. Jordan was third.

Thomas Jr. rebounded from a hard crash the last time the Late Model division raced, Aug. 2. He dominated Saturday's 30-lapper, taking the lead outside Waterford's Chris Garside on the opening lap and never waivering. Mystic's Ryan Morgan was second and Jason Palmer of Berlin was third.

Galvin started the 25-lap Street Stock feature in 11th position before taking control on lap 13. He moved withing one victory of the division's single-season wins record of eleven, set by Dwayne Dorr in 2006. Al Stone III of Durham was second and Ed Gertsch Jr. of East Haven was third.

Next Saturday, the Late Model division is in the spotlight with a special 50-lap feature. The Late Modles will be joined by the SK Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, SK Light Modifieds and INEX Legend Cars.
