Actress presents life of Elizabeth Keckly

Actress Stephanie Jackson will bring her dramatic narrative "They Called Me Lizzy" to North Stonington's Wheeler Library at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 24.

Jackson's one-woman show portrays Elizabeth Keckly, best known as dressmaker and confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln's wife. It covers Keckly's rise from slavery to entrepreneurial freedom, scandal and decline.

Keckly, also the author of "Behind the Scenes, 30 Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House," was born into slavery in 1818. She eventually purchased her freedom and made her way to Washington D.C., where her dressmaking skills and entrepreneurial savvy brought her to the attention of many political families including the Lincolns.

The library is at 101 Main St. and can be reached at (860) 535-0383.
