High school roundup: Ledyard wrestling holds on to 40-38 win over Griswold/Wheeler
Griswold — Talon Vanase (106 pounds), Tatianna Irizarry (113), Joseph Crader (138), Ryan Taggart (157), Braxton Swanbeck (190) and Aidan Schlimgen (285) won by pinfall for the Ledyard High School wrestling team as the Colonels edged Griswold/Wheeler 40-38 Wednesday night.
Josiah Estriplet won a major decision at 126 for Ledyard (2-0).
Caleb Christie (132) won by pin for Griswold/Wheeler (0-2), as did Jesus Busanet (144), Maxwell Gray (165), Michael Capalbo (175) and Jonathon MacFeat (215). Rylee Kenny won by decision at 150 for the Wolverines.
H.S. boys’ basketball
• Devan Williams led four New London players in double figures with 15 points as the Whalers defeated Classical (R.I.) 67-63. New London (2-1) was coming off a 101-97 loss Monday night to Windsor in overtime at The Day Holiday Classic. SaVahn Warren had 11 points for the Whalers and Da’Shaun Phillips and Teeje Punch had 10 each.
• Eddie Fiske scored 23 points for Old Lyme in a 59-49 victory over Hale-Ray. Colman Curtiss-Reardon added 13 points in the victory, with the Wildcats remaining unbeaten at 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the Shoreline Conference. Hunter Rafala had 17 points for Hale-Ray.
• Kyle Kessler had 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in Wheeler’s 55-43 win over Putnam in the Lions’ Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV opener. Deondre Bransford finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, as well, for Wheeler (1-1, 1-0). Zane Brewer and Keith Zardies each had seven points and seven rebounds for the Lions, who led 32-16 at halftime.
• Nick Stavesky scored 20 points and had three steals as Grasso Tech opened its season with a 66-54 win over Prince Tech in a CTC game on Tuesday. Charis Johnson had 12 points and five assists for the Eagles.
• Norwich Tech lost to Goodwin Tech 69-50 in a CTC game on Tuesday. Connor McRae had 14 points, six assists and five steals, John Mastorakis scored 10 and Collin Schulze scored eight for the Warriors (0-3).
H.S. girls’ basketball
• Mariette El Khoury had 22 points for Fitch in a 49-39 loss to No. 9 E.O. Smith. Ada Ellis added nine rebounds and two steals for Fitch (2-2). Jill Dingler led E.O. Smith with 16 points.
• Jada Cheung scored 24 points as Montville beat Tourtellotte 41-40 on Tuesday. Emily Treat had eight points for the Wolves (2-1).
• Lyman Memorial stayed unbeaten with a 37-11 win over Plainfield on Tuesday. Phoebe Carpenter had 16 points and seven rebounds, Jenny Lopez had 15 steals, 12 points and four assists and Makayla Piaseczny had four assists and two blocks for the Bulldogs (3-0). Morgan Yanush led Plainfield with seven points.
H.S. riflery
• Grasso Tech beat Parish Hill 901-852 on Tuesday at the Quaker Hill Road & Gun Club. Logan Gurchik led Grasso (1-1) with 183, Michael Marzec scored 182, Aidan Dahl had 181, Charles Goede had 179 and Gavin Jameson had 176. Dahl had a perfect 50 in prone.
