Local roundup: Ledyard outlasts Montville in wrestling opener
Montville — Back-to-back pins by Brayden Grim and Adam Crawford helped Ledyard open its wrestling season with a 39-25 victory over Montville on Wednesday night.
Grim (170 pounds) won in 5 minutes, 10 seconds while Crawford (182) followed with a pin in 3:02 for the Colonels, who also picked up a pin from Cole Dirico (145) in 4:50.
Connor Doran (106), J'Mari Lowman (113) and Andrew Allen (195) earned major decisions for Ledyard.
The Indians picked up pins from Jayden Colon at 120 (30 seconds), Zack Navarrete at 160 (1:28) and Derrick Deveau at 285 (7:40 in OT) while Quinn Bond earned a major decision at 126.
In other matches:
• Naaji Powell-Keyton (120) recorded a pin in the third period of the final match of the night as New London rallied to beat Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 38-37 on opening night. Freshman Coby Smith (126) earned a pin in his first varsity match for the Whalers, who also picked up a pin from Karl Willoughby (170) and a 9-4 decision from Brayden Rodriguez (145).
• Killingly defeated Norwich Free Academy 56-15. The Wildcats won a pair of matches by forfeit and their only win on the mat came from Dominic Renfree, who won 7-3 at 132.
Girls' basketball
• Vinal Tech defeated Grasso Tech 34-20 in the Eagles' season and Connecticut Technical Conference opener. Samarie Delgado led Grasso Tech with 10 points.
• Norwich Tech lost to Cheney Tech in a CTC game, 28-21. Geovonna Taitague scored 15 points and had six steals, Julia Robert had 12 rebounds, Ashley Williams had five steals and Ashlyn Bill blocked four shots for Norwich Tech (1-1, 1-1).
