Feds: East Lyme bondsman failed to report $260,000 in income

New Haven — An East Lyme resident is facing federal charges after he allegedly failed to report almost $260,000 in taxable income from 2009 through 2012.

According to Deirdre M. Daly, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Joel P. Garland, special agent in charge of IRS criminal investigation in New England, Regan Tippett, 41, was charged last month with four counts of filing a false tax return.

According to the indictment a federal grand jury in New Haven returned on Dec. 7, Tippett is a partner in a company called Statewide Bail Bonds.

The income he allegedly failed to report was derived from bail bond fees, according to the indictment.

Tippett appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah A.L. Merriam in New Haven and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Tippett, who was released on a $50,000 bond, faces up to three years in prison for each count.

The Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division investigated the matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito is prosecuting the case.
