    Local roundup: Norwich Tech reaches CSC volleyball final

    Norwich — Top-seeded Norwich Tech advanced to the final of the Constitution State Conference volleyball tournament with a 3-1 win over No. 4 Ellis Tech on Thursday.

    The Warriors (17-4) will play No. 2 Cheney Tech (18-4) in the final on Saturday at Saint Joseph in West Hartford at 3:30 p.m. The teams did not meet in the regular season.

    Madison Bodley had 20 kills, 14 digs and four aces, Vanessa Gumbs had 15 digs and nine kills and Emily Cherwin had six aces and two blocks for Norwich Tech, which won 25-11, 24-26, 25-10, 25-14.

    Women's basketball

    • Avery Point opened its season with a 75-67 loss to Gateway. Tatyana LaFrance Boyce had 29 points and six rebounds, Kenya Capers had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Meagan Bianchi had 10 points and four assists for the Pointers.

    Men's basketball

    • Tysheen McCrea had 18 points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals for UConn Avery Point in an 87-79 victory over Gateway. William Orr added 17 points and nine rebounds, Nick Fersch 15 points, Amadi White 17 rebounds and Mack Osias 10 rebounds for the Pointers (1-0).

    Boys' soccer

    • Nick Chrillo and Oliver Falla each score twice as Williams School closed out its regular season with an 8-0 win over St. Thomas More. Kevin Masson, George Sun, Jacob Marchesi and Harry Anselmi also scored for Williams (3-8-1). 

    Girls' soccer

    • Old Lyme attempts to become the first program in Shoreline Conference history to win four straight girls' tournament championships when the top-seeded Wildcats play No. 6 North Branford in the title game at 5 p.m. Friday at Portland High School. Old Lyme (14-1-2) defeated North Branford (10-2-6) 1-0 during the regular season on Sept. 26 at North Branford.

    H.S. swimming

    • The two-day Eastern Connecticut Conference swimming and diving championships begin on Friday when the East Lyme Aquatics Center hosts the diving portion of the competition at 4:30 p.m. The swimming titles will be determined at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at UConn Avery Point in Groton. East Lyme went unbeaten during the regular season in the ECC and is favored to win the meet.

    H.S. cross country

    • Norwich Free Academy's boys will be the only ECC team to compete in the State Open championship meet at 2 p.m. Friday at Wickham Park in Manchester. ECC champion Brandon Mehlinger leads the Wildcats, who qualified by placing eighth in Class LL, and will be joined by teammates Nick Fitch, Vinny Huang, Luke Shea, Brenden Sholes, Frankie Perrino and Christian Dubreuil. They will be joined by three local individuals — East Lyme sophomore Sam Whittaker, Fitch junior Tom Readett and Ledyard junior Zak King.

    In the girls' race, which follows at 2:45 p.m., three local runners will participate — East Lyme junior Rasa Kirvelevicius, Montville sophomore Mady Whittaker and St. Bernard senior Ellen Arvidson.
