Some may disagree, but I think September is the best month to visit Block Island. I went last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the sweeping ocean views and bucolic scenery without all the regular summer hustle-and-bustle that months like July or August may present. Bike rentals are also cheaper (at least on the days I visited this year and last), allowing for some great exploring without breaking the bank. If you head up to the island’s North Lighthouse, as we did, prepare for a long steady hill on the way there and a steep one on the way back, but the effort is worth it. We found a wonderfully pristine and secluded beach with light blue waters and soft, white sand (behind the lighthouse) and laid there for an hour without burning, because it’s September now. But this is precisely what I mean when I say September is best — it isn’t too hot, the humidity has subsided and the island is empty.
