Info meeting on golf carts in East Lyme

East Lyme The Board of Selectmen is holding a public informational meeting before its meeting on Wednesday to solicit input on a proposed ordinance that would allow golf carts on town roads.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at the Town Hall.

A new state law lets licensed drivers operate golf carts on town roads posted with 25-mph speed limits. The Board of Selectmen reviewed the state law and compiled information on what other towns, such as Old Saybrook, were doing. The East Lyme Police Department also provided input on the ordinance.

The proposed ordinance permits electric-powered golf carts to be driven in specific areas, with speeds no more than 25 mph. Golf carts must be registered annually for $25 at the police department and licensed. Vehicles must be equipped with a flag, a locking brake, reverse warning device, head lamps, tail lamps, turn signals, horn and passenger safety restraints for passengers seated backward.

Selectman Jack Hogan, who took the initiative to draft the ordinance, said the purpose of the law is to allow residents to be able to use golf carts in beach communities. The informational meeting is for residents to provide feedback on the matter before it goes to a public hearing.
