No to Senate seat for Blumenthal

The Day's editorial titled "Blumenthal's Vietnam comments distressing, perplexing," published May 19, was right on target. I believe the electorate should concentrate on Mr. Blumenthal's intent in physically avoiding the quagmire in Vietnam. His five military deferments before joining the Marine Reserves and, eventually, getting assigned to a Washington, D.C., post that practically guaranteed he would not be sent to Vietnam tells a lot about his character.

It is reminiscent of former President George W. Bush, who joined the Texas Air National Guaard so he wouldn't, and didn't, go to war. Yet he had no trouble sending thousands of others into Iraq when he wrongly exercised his power - and we're still there.

Think twice before sending Richard Blumenthal to the U.S. Senate where he will craft and vote on bills that will become law for a system of government he avoided serving when the call was made.
