Art Center Killingworth’s Classical NightOut Set for Nov. 20, with Special Family Workshop Earlier in Day
The Arts Center at Killingworth (ACK) presents Swinging Classical NightOut: Rags...To Gershwin on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Killingworth Congregational Church, 273 Route 81. Acclaimed pianist Mary Kathleen Ernst will play pieces by Tobias Picker, Adeline Shepherd, George Gershwin, and others. Ernst has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress. Also on Nov. 20, Ernst will present a Family Musical Workshop: Playing the Piano without Hands from 4:30 to 5:30. Workshop participants will create sound effects using "Extended Techniques" by plucking and strumming strings inside the piano, using percussion mallets, and objects that resonate when the keys are played. How to mute strings using pedal and chord clusters will also be demonstrated. Music by modern composers John Cage, Stephen Montague, Ruth Lomon, Emma Lou Diemer, and Judith Shatin will be used to explore these unusual techniques. The workshop is also held at the Killingworth Congregational Church. Cost: $5 per family.
