    Portland Cello Project rocks

It's probably not a coincidence that the acronym for the Portland Cello Project is PCP. Attending a performance by the group must at least in part be similar to a hallucinatory experience.

The virtuosic ensemble - indeed, a revolving collection of cellists and various adjunct musicians and vocalists - perform a stunningly wide repertoire by such artists as Jay-Z and Kanye West, the Dandy Warhols, Arvo Part, Lil Wayne and Britney Spears, to name just a few. The arrangements are clever and visionary and, while quirkily conceptional, are never snide or too ironic.

The PCP are gifted musicians having a ball exploring all the best possibilities of stylistic cross-pollinization - and it sounds fabulous even as it astounds. Their latest CD, "Homage," was out in April, and the ensemble performs Sunday at the Hygienic Art Park.

    - RICK KOSTER

The Portland Cello Project, 6 p.m. Sunday, Hygienic Art Park, Bank St., New London; $8; (860) 443-8001, hygienic.org.
