Groton — Town police have identified the suspect apprehended in connection with an armed bank robbery earlier this afternoon as Kevin A. Dew Jr., 28, of 225 Coleman St., New London, according to a press release.

Naval Submarine Base, New London and Groton Town police jointly apprehended Dew in the outbound lane of the base's main gate around 1:12 p.m. Friday. Dew was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree larceny, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal use of a firearm, possession of a pistol without a permit, and possessing a weapon in a motor vehicle.

Police seized an undisclosed amount of money and a semi-automatic pistol.

Groton police notified submarine base security around 1 p.m. of the robbery of the Naval Federal Credit Union branch located off-base on Sailfish Drive in Groton. Police had tracked the suspect to the base and were requesting base assistance.

Base police and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are assisting Groton police in the ongoing investigation.
