Norwich – The polling precinct at the John M. Moriarty School was selected randomly as one of 75 precincts statewide that will have to conduct hand recounts of the ballots cast using the state’s electronic scanning machines.

Deputy Democratic Registrar Dianne Daniels said Tuesday that a date has not yet been set for the recount.

Each year, the Secretary of the State’s office selects 75 voting precincts for the hand recount to assure that the optical scanning machines are accurate.

The only other southeastern Connecticut district chosen for the recount was the Fields Memorial School polling place in Bozrah.

“We don’t just take the machines’ word for it,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said. “So we will have every ballot cast in a full 10 percent of precincts using optical scan machines hand counted and matched against the machine totals. Connecticut has the toughest elections audit law in the country and I am confident that following this audit the numbers will once again match.”
