Warrant: Man assaulted wife, attacked wife's brother

New London — A man accused of assaulting his wife and then hitting one of her brothers with a tire iron last month appeared in court Wednesday on several charges related to that incident.

Gerson Ortiz, 34, of 19 Jay St. was ordered to stay away from his wife and had his case continued until Dec. 10. He is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

According to witness reports, an intoxicated Ortiz shook, strangled and threw his wife to the floor during an argument Oct. 27. Three of the couple’s children, ages 11, 9 and 8, looked on, according to court documents.

Following the assault, Ortiz’s wife left her Buchanan Road home with the children and went to her brother’s Third Street residence. Ortiz followed her there, but one of the woman’s two brothers went outside the home to tell Ortiz to leave. Ortiz tried to start a fight, the report says, and took a tire iron out of his Honda Accord. He approached one brother and took a swing at his head, but the man blocked the wrench with his arm. That brother was taken to the hospital with a left arm injury.

After the attack, Ortiz tried to run down one brother with his car as he left the scene.

Following his arrest Tuesday, police charged Ortiz with second-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of risk of injury to a minor, second-degree breach of peace and disorderly conduct.
