As feared, Sun lose McCray for season

Connecticut Sun guard/forward Danielle McCray is expected to miss the 2013 season with a complete tear of her Achilles' tendon, the team announced Tuesday.

McCray averaged 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in FIBA Euroleague play for Familia Schio of Italy before the injury last week. She will need surgery and will undergo between five and six months of rehabilitation.

Last week, Asjha Jones also announced she would not play this summer for the Sun, citing recurring injuries. Jones, a UConn graduate, was a member of the 2012 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team in London.

"It is very disappointing that Danielle has suffered another significant injury that will require surgery," first-year Sun coach Anne Donovan said in a press release. "She was having a great season in Italy, and I was very much looking forward to her return to the Sun. I am confident that Danielle is a tough player who will fight through and come back even stronger."

With Connecticut in 2012, McCray appeared in 28 games with eight starts, averaging 4.8 points with 20 3-pointers.

The Sun will open its 11th season at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 25 against the New York Liberty.
