Montville funding for school security cut

Montville - Funding for school security measures has been cut from the 2013-14 capital budget in an effort to keep the budget increase as low as possible.

The mayor's proposed budget represented a 0.61 percent increase, but several town councilors have stated their desire to have no increase.

The Board of Finance Tuesday decreased the mayor's proposed budget by $524,700 through revenue increases and line item decreases. The budget is now $55,433,448, a small decrease from the current $55,621,140.

The board eliminated a $94,240 line item in the capital budget for a school security system. The system would require teachers to swipe a card for access into the school before normal hours, rather than buzzing the main office as they do now.

Funding to replace exterior doors at Tyl Middle School, which Mayor Ronald McDaniel said are old and easy to break into, was also removed from the capital budget.

Committee member and Town Council Chairperson Candy Buebendorf said that the Board of Education's failure to file a building report as required by state law was a factor in her decision to vote against the funding for door replacements.

The board also eliminated funding for a police car and a school bus from the capital budget.
