Greenwich (AP) — Greenwich officials plan to spend $25,000 to check the residency of all the students enrolling in its elementary schools for the upcoming school year.

The Greenwich Time reports the money will be used to hire temporary employees, who will assist district officials in the initiative to ensure that all 4,100 students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade are actually Greenwich residents.

Currently only parents of new students were required to prove residency in the district.

The wealthy New York suburb last year sought a requirement that landlords provide notarized affidavits confirming the residency of tenants with children.

But education officials scrapped that plan after concluding that obtaining a landlord's affidavit comprised an undue burden for families who rent.
