Mass. casino panel to question Mohegan Sun

Boston (AP) — State gambling regulators are expected to question Mohegan Sun executives about their finances before deciding whether the Connecticut casino operator can move forward with its bid for a $1 billion casino development in the town of Palmer.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission plans to hold a so-called "suitability" hearing for Mohegan Sun on Thursday. It will be the first such hearing for any of the companies seeking a regional resort casino license in the state.

If Mohegan Sun is deemed suitable after the hearing and receives a favorable vote in a Nov. 5 town referendum, it can then apply to the commission for the sole western Massachusetts license.

A suitability hearing for MGM Resorts International, which has proposed a resort casino in Springfield, will be held for later this fall.
