    Local roundup: Hardison named East Lyme girls' hoop coach

    East Lyme - Colleen Hardison has been hired as the girls' basketball coach at East Lyme High School, athletic director Steve Hargis announced Wednesday.

    "Colleen brings a unique set of skills and background to our program as she is not only extremely knowledgeable about the basketball X's and O's, but is now a teacher and a former East Lyme assistant coach," Hargis said in a statement. "I believe this combination enables her to carry on the successful tradition of East Lyme girls' basketball while at the same time allow her to connect to our basketball community and grow the program."

    Hardison, a Windham High graduate, was East Lyme's JV coach from 2009-11. She left to become an assistant coach at Rhode Island College and, for the past year-and-a-half, has been a social studies teacher at Marine Science Magnet in Groton and was a Coast Guard Academy assistant coach.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Kristy Gallant had 20 saves as Killingly handed Stonington its first loss of the season, 1-0, in an ECC game. Madison Weaver scored at 53:22 for Killingly. Annie Knizeski had three saves for the Bears (7-1, 7-1).

    • Waterford and Fitch played to a scoreless overtime tie in the ECC. Jodie Weiss made four saves for the Lancers (5-3-1, 5-2-1) and Emma Nolan stopped four shots for the Falcons (3-5-2, 3-4-1).

    • Gabby Peterson had a goal and two assists, but Williams was beaten by Bancroft in overtime, 4-3. Carleigh O'Connell and Rose Pellegrini also scored goals for the Blues (1-4-2), Christina Cimini had an assist and goalie Hannah Zamone made four saves.

    Men's soccer

    • Scott Hansen scored both goals to lead Eastern Nazarene past Mitchell College, 2-0. The Lions (2-9) held an 18-14 edge in shots and Ramazan Sinani made nine saves for the Mariners (5-8).

    Women's soccer

    • Michelle Rossignol scored on a penalty kick in the 100th minute to give Elms its 1-0 win over Mitchell in the New England Collegiate Conference. Kaylee Woodford of Niantic had 21 saves for the Mariners (1-8, 1-3).

    Women's volleyball

    • Courtney Banks had 13 kills and 10 digs as Newbury bested Mitchell 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 in the NECC. Nicole Caminiti had 21 assist and nine digs for the Mariners (4-10, 1-2) while Gloria Charles added 12 digs and nine kills.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Melissa Castillo had 22 digs and eight aces as NFA beat Plainfield 25-20, 25-17, 25-14. Brianne Brennan had 13 kills and two aces for NFA (10-3) and Olivia Lane added nine kills. Also, Alyssa Velles had seven kills.

    • Grasso Tech rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Ellis Tech 18-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17 and 15-9 in the Constitution State Conference.

    Pam Olivera had five kills to lead the Eagles (4-8) while Rittanna Chiren had seven servie points and Keila Lastraglio had 10 service points and five aces.

    • Megan Astley had five kills and 13 digs as Old Lyme lost to Morgan 25-17, 25-5, 25-15 in the Shoreline Conference.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Justin Shafner (18:42) finished first and Ben Lahm (19:21) placed third for Williams as it beat Chase Collegiate (24-31), Christian Heritage (15-48), and Fishers Island (15-50). Brien Bradley (19:45) took fourth for Williams and Adam Verhoeff (20:26) finished seventh. Aaron Kane (24:05) took 22nd for Fishers Island and Thad Allen (24:07) placed 23rd.

    • Old Lyme edged Haddam-Killingworth 32-33 in a six-team Shoreline Conference meet at H-K on Tuesday. Ross Golebiewski was the overall winner for the Wildcats, finishing in 17:11, while Stuart Ross was was fifth (17:34), Cole McKnight sixth (17:38), Jake Watts-St. Germain seventh (17:57) and Jack Castonguay 13th (18:27).

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Juli Brown finished sixth (26:06) and Sophia di Tomasso placed ninth (26:29) for Williams, but it lost to Chase Collegiate (19-27) and and Christian Heritage (25-32). Rachel Goldstein came in 10th (27:38) for Williams. Amber Ferguson placed 11th (28:25) for Fishers Island and Molly Cypherd took 14th (30:32).

    • Old Lyme won the unseeded race in a five-school Shoreline Conference meet at H-K. The Wildcats had 31 points, 20 better than Valley Regional. Rachel Vandette finished third for Old Lyme (22:06.8) followed by Abby Guitar (fifth, 23:04), Ava Restrepo (sixth, 23:11); Jenna Duxbury (seventh, 23:31) and Aliza Hackling (10th, 23:55).
