Philatelic event will mark Morgan's departure from Mystic
Mystic — The Mystic River Historical Society will hold a philatelic event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon to observe the departure of the restored whaleship Charles W. Morgan as it leaves the village for a tour of historic New England ports this summer.
A postal station will be set up at the Portersville Academy, 74 High St., and a pictorial cancel will be applied to philatelic covers (envelopes). The covers may be furnished by visitors, or covers may be purchased with the proceeds to benefit the society. The purchased covers will have one of two cachets (pictures) and an insert with a brief history of the Morgan and of ship artist John Leavitt on the cancel. The two cachets offered are: one with the proposed itinerary of the 2014 voyage; the other of the Morgan taken 60 years ago.
