Norwich man charged with repeated assault of female in vacant residence

Norwich — Police arrested a 51-year-old Norwich man Friday for restraining and repeatedly assaulting a female over a period of several days at a vacant residence in the Occum section of town.

Police went to the house at 9:48 a.m. Friday to investigate a complaint of squatters at a vacant residence in the Occum section of Norwich. There, they found a male and female and in the course of the investigation learned that the female was being assaulted by the male, police said.

Ralph Spero, of 76 New Village St. was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree strangulation, cruelty to persons, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree threatening, first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree criminal mischief and criminal attempt at theft of utilities.

The Norwich Police Domestic Violence Unit and Victim Advocate assisted with the investigation.

Spero was held in lieu of a $500,000 bond on the assault charges and in lieu of a $10,000 bond on the trespassing charges. He is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Tuesday.
