    Local roundup: New London Legion off to a quick start

    New London — New London completed a three-game sweep of Norwich to open the American Legion baseball Zone 6 season with a 13-0 win in five innings on Sunday night.

    Robert Otanez pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks. Mike Williams had a run-scoring triple in the first inning and Hendrik Khoury, Connor Surprenant and Bo Rodriguez had two hits each for New London.

    Khoury had three hits as New London won 9-5 in 10 innings on Saturday. Elijah Martinez singled and doubled for New London. Ryan King singled twice and had a double for Norwich (0-3) and starter Daniel Blair allowed two earned runs with eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

    NECBL

    • The Mystic Schooners dropped to 1-4 with an 8-0 loss to the Upper Valley Nighthawks in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) had two of Mystic's five hits. Schooners starter Zach Thompson (Maryland) allowed two hits and one unearned run over five innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

    Speedbowl

    • Kyle James of Ashaway, R.I., won the SK Modified race at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night. Veteran Waterford driver Rob Janovic Jr. finished second and Dylan Izzo of Monroe was third.

    Others winners included Jonathan Puleo of Branford (SK Lite Modified), Jason Palmer of Berlin (Late Model), Shawn Gaedeke of Groton (Sportsman), Douglas Curry of Groton (Mini Stocks) and Duane Noll of Monroe (Trucks).
