New London Public Schools on Monday will award with the Seal of Biliteracy to 46 graduating seniors who have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one other language.

The Seal of Biliteracy is placed on the high school diplomas and transcripts of graduates, a reference to a student’s ability to read and write in those languages at a high level of proficiency, in addition to their speaking and listening skills.

The Seal of Biliteracy was signed into law by the governor in June 2017 and Connecticut is one of approximately 30 states currently awarding this special designation.

The Seal of Biliteracy will be awarded to students from New London High School and the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut in one of three languages: Spanish, French and Tagalog, which is spoken in the Philippines.

Students will be formally recognized at Class Day awards at noon Monday at New London High School.
