UPDATED: DEEP suspends search for man missing in Connecticut River

Lyme — The search for a 42-year-old Meriden man who went missing while swimming in the Connecticut River Sunday was suspended Monday afternoon.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Chris Collibee said earlier Monday that state Environmental Conservation Police, state police, Lyme firefighters, the South District Dive Team and the state police dive team began searching for the man, who went missing near the Hadlyme Ferry launch, about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The launch is next to Gillette Castle State Park, which does not have a designated swimming area.

Officials called off the search when the sun went down Sunday but resumed it on Monday. The DEEP referred to the man as a drowning victim in announcing it had suspended the search.
