Jury selection underway in New London shooting case

Jury selection began Monday in New London Superior Court in the case of Javier J. Muniz, who is charged with shooting a man in the leg in New London on June 22, 2017.

Muniz, 31, of Norwich, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and firearms charges and opted for a jury trial.

On June 22, New London police responded to a call of multiple shots fired near the intersection of Truman and Coit streets. Officers located a man nearby who had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg that was non-life threatening.

With assistance from the community, detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Muniz in connection with the shooting.

At the time of his arrest, Muniz was on federal probation for previous weapon violations.

Six jurors and two alternates will hear the case beginning Sept. 12 in Judge Barbara Bailey Jongbloed's courtroom. On Monday, Muniz sat with his attorney, Matthew J. Costello, as Costello and prosecutor Stephen M. Carney introduced themselves and began questioning prospective jurors.

Muniz is being held in lieu of $150,000 at the New Haven Correctional Center.
