State drops charges against former boyfriend of missing Groton woman

New London — Prosecutors on Tuesday opted not to pursue two charges against the former boyfriend of Sofia McKenna, a woman who has been missing since she left Groton on a mini sailboat last May at the age of 21.

The charges against North Stonington resident Austin Parrow, 21, weren’t related to McKenna’s disappearance.

Per an arrest report The Day obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Groton Town police charged Parrow with breach of peace and second-degree threatening on May 9, 2018, after he tried to force his way in to McKenna’s Groton apartment.

Police said Parrow, whom McKenna described as her ex-boyfriend, kicked and punched the door violently and screamed through it. They said he accused McKenna of cheating on him and threatened to slit her throat if she didn’t let him in.

Police said Parrow at one point quieted down, then charged at McKenna when she opened the door to see if he had left. She slammed the door before he could get in.

McKenna, who said her new boyfriend was in the apartment that night, told police she had been hospitalized before because of injuries Parrow allegedly inflicted. She said she believed Parrow might kill her, according to the report.

The name of the new boyfriend, who declined to provide a statement to police, is redacted in the report.

In arresting Parrow, police ordered him to have no contact with McKenna, but a judge lifted that portion of the protective order the next day and required only that Parrow stay away from McKenna’s apartment.

Asked for an update on McKenna’s disappearance, state police spokeswoman Trooper 1st Class Tanya Compagnone said McKenna and Parrow “were by all accounts still together and in regular contact” in the days before her disappearance.

“Investigators of course look at all angles in an investigation of this nature and certainly this particular aspect has been thoroughly explored,” Compagnone said. “At this time it appears that Parrow has no connection to her disappearance ... however, all avenues will continue to be investigated and all new leads and tips followed up on.”

Reached by phone Wednesday, prosecutors at New London Superior Court deferred to the clerk when asked why they entered a “nolle” in Parrow’s case. The clerk deferred to the prosecutors.

A “nolle” means a person’s charges are dismissed after 13 months if they don’t reoffend.

Parrow, who represented himself, didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

McKenna and her friend Spencer Mugford, 20, launched from UConn Avery Point early on May 27, 2018, and were last seen in Snapchat posts they sent from New London Ledge Light about 2 a.m. that day.

The Coast Guard called off its search for the pair the next day — the same day the Southold Police Department found the 14-foot boat the pair had used, near Orient Point on Long Island, N.Y.

Though Mugford’s body was found June 8, 2018, in Long Island Sound southeast of Avery Point, McKenna still is missing.

Compagnone said lead investigator Detective Randy Silvestri, who works out of the state police Troop E barracks in Montville, said there’s still “very much an active, ongoing investigation” into McKenna’s disappearance.

Compagnone said Silvestri and other detectives have interviewed friends and family and repeatedly have combed through evidence in the case. She said investigators canvassed the area per protocol and found no useful camera footage from Avery Point, Ledge Light or anywhere in between.

Compagnone said anyone with information may contact Silvestri at (860) 848-6566.
