    H.S. track: Ledyard's Smith is on the fast track in Class M

    New Britain — Ledyard High School senior James Smith won the 200 meters in 22.56 seconds and was second in the 100 in 11.28 at the Class M state championship meet Wednesday at Willow Brook Park, as the Colonels finished fourth in the team standings with 50.25 points.

    Smith was also part of Ledyard's 4x400 relay which finished third in 3:29.82, joining Adam Crawford, Jahmik Devone and Ian Kamperschroer. Also for Ledyard, Crawford was second in the 110 hurdles (40.41), Jaiden Bickham was third in the 100 (11.29) and sixth in the 200 (22.92) and Crawford was fifth in the javelin (151-7).

    Second-place finishes went to Norwich Tech's Jagger Petersen in the high jump (5-10), Stonington's Joey Hinckley in the pole vault (13-0) and Montville's Tyrone Mack in the shot put (50-8.5). Mack was also third in the discus (134-6). Stonington's 4x100 relay of Sam Inthasit, Ben Abely, Martin Vernet and Justin McKenna was second in 44.21.

    Stonington's Rhys Hammond was fourth in the 800 (1:58.57) and the 1,600 (4:25.59) and Montville's Ashwin Kuruchi was fourth in the triple jump (41-3.25).

    Tolland won the team title with 68 points.

    In other meets:

    • East Lyme's Sam Whittaker won the 1,600 (4:21.82) and teammate Chris Abbey was third (4:33.53) in the Class MM state championship meet at Middletown. The meet was suspended after 11 events and will resume at 10 a.m. Thursday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Hillhouse leads the team standings with 76.5 points.

    Waterford's Kayvon Negahban was second in the high jump at 6-2 and teammate Sam Menders was fifth in the high jump (6-0) and sixth in the long jump (20-7.5). Other local placewinners were East Lyme's Josh Morton (fourth, 123-10) and Zachary Todd (sixth, 119-4) in the discus. East Lyme's 4x800 relay team of Matt Kung, Rob Avena, Magnum Brandt and Fred Rukundo was fourth in 8:17.41. 

    Girls

    • Stonington's Lila Rich was second in the pole vault at 10-0 and teammate Gwen Anderson was third in the 100 (13.05) and sixth in the 200 (27.18) at the Class M state championship meet in New Britain. Keegan Donohue, Emma Small, Lindsey Orr and Jess Detwiler also added a third-place finish for the Bears in the 4x800 with a time of 10:07.41.

    Other local placewinners were Ledyard's Nadia Helme, third in the long jump (17-3); Montville's Lauren Ross, fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.44); Montville's Jenny Alarcon, fourth in the shot put (34-9); Montville's MacKenzie Clark, fourth in the triple jump (34-9.75) and fifth in the long jump (16-10); Ledyard's Natalie Poulton, sixth in the discus (96-9) and Montville's Mady Whittaker, sixth in the 800 (2:20.55).

    Weston won the team title with 95.50 points.

    • East Lyme's Darya Mikusova was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 16.29 seconds at the Class MM meet at Middletown. The meet was suspended after seven events due to inclement weather and will resume at 10 a.m. Thursday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
