Llama Tsunami headlines Saturday Ska Prom at the Hygienic

Globally, most people probably believe the idea of mixing a beast with a meteorological situation for artistic expression started with the 2013 made-for-TV disaster film called "Sharknado." It stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Frances McDormand in story about how sharks are uplifted by an ocean-hovering waterspout and dropped on land to rage and gnaw indiscriminantly.

But! Five long years before that, here in southeastern Connecticut, a modern ska group formed called Llama Tsunami. Those of us who've danced to the band's infectious sounds are so happy with the music that we can't even stay mad at the makers of "Sharknado" for ripping off the concept. In fact, we're looking forward to Saturday, when Llama Tsunami headlines in New London at the Hygienic Art Park.

It's Ska Prom 2019! Fans dress as if for an actual school prom and dance the night away. Also on the bill are The Copacetics and Ghost Tones. Maybe your own prom sucked or maybe you didn't even graduate. Maybe you wrote a treatment for a film called "A Nor'easter of Rats" and nobody bought it. Forget it and have fun! Dress formally because Ska Prom 2019 is here and Llama Tsunami is at your service.

Ska Prom 2019, 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Hygienic Art Park, 79 Bank St., New London; $15 advance, $20 door; (860) 443-8001.
