Upcoming roadwork planned on Interstate 95 in Groton, New London and Waterford

The state Department of Transportation has announced upcoming roadwork in the region.

The DOT said the Route 349 Northbound on-ramp (3B) to Interstate 95 southbound in Groton is scheduled to be closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, to “facilitate bridge expansion joint replacement activities.”

“Please follow detour by continuing northbound on Route 349 onto I-95 northbound,” DOT said. The agency instructs drivers to take the first exit — Exit 88 for Route 117 — and at the intersection light at bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Route 177 north, then take the first right to return to I-95 south. The detour will be clearly marked with signs, DOT said.

On Monday and Tuesday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., DOT has scheduled bridge joint maintenance on I-95 south on the Gold Star Bridge in Groton and New London, as part of its pavement preservation program, the DOT said in another release.

“Motorists can expect a pattern to close the left two lanes on Interstate 95 southbound between Exit 86 (and) Exit 84 in Groton,” the release states. “Traffic control personnel and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone.”

Additionally, concrete repairs will prompt closures on northbound stretches of I-95 in New London, Waterford and Groton later this month and into December.

Work on that project — on the Thames River Overpass bridge, or Bridge 03819 — is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Nov. 30 through Dec. 11. It will be performed by Hammonasset Construction and is part of DOT's bridge maintenance program, according to a news release.

However, modifications or extensions of the project may be necessary if there is inclement weather or “other unforeseen conditions,” the release said.

Drivers are advised to expect lane closures on I-95 north between exits 82 and 85 in the three municipalities, and should drive cautiously at a safe speed in these areas during the work. Traffic control personnel and signs will be used to guide vehicles through the work zones, the release said.
