Mystic Rotary awards grants to help seniors

Mystic -- The Rotary Club of Mystic has announced $20,000 in grants to support the senior population of Groton, Stonington and North Stonington and ensure their mental and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants were made in collaboration with several partner organizations and through a $15,000 contribution from The Pfizer Foundation Inc.

The grants include $5,000 to the Groton Senior Center and $1,500 to the Warm Shelter Inc. of Westerly to provide take-home prepared meals for those in need.

Another $5,000 went to the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeastern Connecticut to cover costs of essential items for clients who lack adequate financial resources and are not covered by health insurance. A total of $8,500 went to to St. Edmund's Retreat on Enders Island for its Connections for Seniors program, a new effort aimed at alleviating the burden of COVID-19 isolation.

This will include monthly remote audio/video events for seniors including speakers on a variety of topics offering strategies to reduce stress and promote exercises to help alleviate anxiety and improve health. A senior calling program will also be instituted.
