Stonington voters approve 2021-22 budget
Stonington — Residents approved the 2021-22 budget and its 0.49-mill tax rate increase at Tuesday's referendum.
The $73.1 million budget was approved by a vote of 451-228 with just 5% of the town's 14,767 registered voters casting ballots.
Overall the budget showed a 2.2%, or $1.5 million, increase compared to the current budget. Much of that increase came from the education budget, which received a $934,496, or 2.5%, hike in spending, the first increase in a few years. The capital improvement budget jumped 13.7%, or $334,688.
After announcing the vote at the resumed virtual town meeting, First Selectwoman Danielle Chesebrough said that creating the budget took the work of a long list of people.
"Thank you to everyone who made this moment possible and the voters who came out," she said.
