    Local roundup: Hartel leads Conn to victory in NESCAC opener

    New London — Andrew Hartel scored 17 points and had seven rebounds as Connecticut College beat Colby 69-63 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference men's basketball opener for both teams on Friday night.

    Jarron Flynn had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals and Cam Schainfeld had 11 points and five rebounds for Conn (6-4). Matt Hanna had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Colby (7-5).

    The win was the Camels' first NESCAC victory since Feb. 10, 2017, when they beat Colby 70-60.

    In other games:

    • Friday's snow forced St. Thomas More to push back its annual Founder's Tournament a day. The Chancellors will now play Thetford Academy in the opening round on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. following the first game between Lee Academy and Springfield Commonwealth at 5:30. The consolation (12:30 p.m.) and championship game (2:30 p.m.) will now be played on Sunday. 

    Women's basketball

    • Colby beat Conn College 66-51 in the NESCAC opener for both. Jaycie Rojik scored 22 points and Emily Tripp had 13 points and six rebounds for Conn (2-10). Adaobi Nebuwa led Colby (9-1) with 16 points and seven rebounds.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Milena Walker scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds as Waterford beat Killingly 52-42 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II game Thursday night. Natalie Lombardi had 12 points and four steals, Izzi Fraser had seven rebounds and Mia Chiappone had nine points and four assists for Waterford (5-1, 2-1). Laura Farquhar and Molly Crabtree each scored 11 for Killingly.

    H.S. riflery

    • Abigail Nadeau led Grasso Tech to an 805-799 win over Vinal Tech on Thursday. Nadeau scored a 174 out of 200, including a perfect score in prone. Also scoring for the Eagles (2-0) were Reece Guillet (162), Orin Dube (162), Juliana Walker (157) and Gavin Jameson (150).
