Local roundup: Williams named women’s swimming and diving coach at Conn College

New London — Mindy Williams has been named Connecticut College’s new head coach of the women’s swimming and diving program, athletic director Mo White announced on Monday.

Williams has been the associated head coach since 2021, and replaces Marc Benvenuti, will who remain head coach of the men’s program after coaching both teams for 20 seasons.

"Mindy has been a tremendous asset from the moment she joined the staff, and this promotion is so richly deserved and aligns with the college's commitment to coaching excellence," White said in a release. "This will allow both Marc and Mindy to recruit the most talented scholar-athletes to Conn, while providing the level of coaching needed for a national-caliber swimming and diving team."

Williams has 20 years of coaching experience at the Division III level, including time at Simmons University in Boston prior to joining the Camels, where she led the program to 12 straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference titles and two New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships. The program also qualified athletes for the NCAA Championship in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

She was named GNAC Coach of the Year eight times and New England Coach of the Year four times.

"This is such an exciting and important opportunity for all Connecticut College swimmers and divers," said Benvenuti. "Mindy has proven herself as a fierce competitor, excellent coach, and compassionate leader and role model. After 20 years of coaching the women's program, I am thrilled that Mindy will be the one at the helm for the future of the women's team's development."
