Mystic Aquarium releases seal rescued in Bermuda

Mystic ― Mystic Aquarium has announced that on Tuesday morning it released “Northlands,” a juvenile gray seal that had been rescued on a Bermuda beach on Feb. 18.

The seal had been at the aquarium since March 20. It was initially cared for by staff at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo. The four-month-old Northlands was released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, R.I. on Tuesday.

Gray seals typically live along the coast of Canada and the northeastern United States and are not found in the waters off Bermuda. When found, Northlands was malnourished, dehydrated and weighed just 26 pounds. On Tuesday, it weighed 55 pounds.

“It has been such an honor to be a part of Northlands’ journey and we’ve seen tremendous growth during the time he’s spent here with us at Mystic Aquarium,” said Sarah Callan, the manager of the aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program. “It’s been a true, international team effort and I believe I speak for all of us when I say we are thrilled to see Northlands return to his ocean home in good health.”
